Ananda Yoga

Ananda Yoga is a very gentle yoga style and just perfect for a total recreation during yoga retreats. “Ananda” is a Sanskrit word and means felicitousness, which exists out of itself and is not conditional on exterior circumstances. Ananda Yoga was developed by an American named Donald J. Walters, known as Swami Kriyananda. For 45 years he was a direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda, the author of the spiritual classic, “Autobiography of a Yogi”. Obviously Swami Kriyananda used the knowledge he got by training with Paramahansa Yogananda to develop this gentle yoga type which emphasizes on meditation. It uses asanas and pranayama to awake, experience, and begin to control the subtle energies within oneself, especially the energies of the chakras. The idea of Swami Kriyananda was to move from body awareness through energy awareness to, finally, inner awareness. To work more directly and consciously on this goal Ananda Yoga uses the unique feature of silent affirmations while holding the asanas.
